As the vibrant state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, Mainz combines historical significance with modern economic strength and innovative power. With a population of around 224,000, it is the state’s largest city and, together with the neighboring Hessian city of Wiesbaden, forms a unique cross-state twin-city hub with a combined population of approximately half a million people. In addition to its role as the renowned home of Johannes Gutenberg University and a major media hub (SWR, ZDF), Mainz has firmly established itself as the base for internationally active companies such as Schott AG, Werner & Mertz, and BioNTech.

The work is based on the city-wide 3D city model already in place, along with additional geospatial data (digital terrain models, oblique aerial imagery, and point clouds). The goal is to generate, continuously expand, and maintain a dynamic virtual 3D city model that will serve both strategic planning—covering urban development, noise control, climate protection, and flood mitigation—and complex analyses and simulations. A key system requirement is web-based visualization, complemented by intuitive functions for measurement, viewing, exporting, and printing. To ensure a comprehensive representation of the city’s history and infrastructure, historical elements—such as buildings that have been destroyed or demolished—are also to be integrated.

To meet the client’s requirements, PlexMap Magazine is being implemented as the central CityGML data repository. Processes for data updates and maintenance are being established and managed via the PlexMap Switchboard. The PlexMap 3D, PlexMap 2D, PlexMap Oblique, and PlexMap Points apps are used for visualization. Furthermore, Geoplex is providing the PlexMap BIM and XPlan interfaces. The installation is complemented by interfaces to the existing ArcGIS-based viewer and to Street Smart for visualizing street-level imagery.
